Imagine: it’s 1955. The Cold War is in the air. In Colorado Springs, soldiers are braced for the worst. Then a phone rings, normally reserved for deadly emergencies.
On the other end: no general, no alarm, no code word… but a child asking if Santa Claus is home.
A mistake in an advertisement with enormous consequences
The trigger was as simple as it was explosive: an incorrect printed phone number. A local advertisement advertised a number supposedly allowing children to reach Santa Claus, but due to an error, the call was routed to the precursor to NORAD, an organization designed to defend North America.
And so the unthinkable happened: a military command post received Christmas phone calls.
Colonel Shoup made a decision that no one forgot.
The officer receiving the calls, Colonel Harry Shoup, had two options: cut them off or join in the magic. He chose the latter. Instead of sending children away, he had his team provide answers about Santa’s supposed whereabouts.
That one human moment in a rigid military system grew into an annual tradition known to millions.
From secret air defense to global Christmas tradition
What started as a mistake became a standing appointment on Christmas Eve: NORAD has been “tracking” Santa Claus ever since as he travels the world. Today, this is done through a website, social media, and a large team of volunteers who answer children’s questions. According to recent reports, the number of contacts on Christmas Eve continues to reach enormous numbers, with tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of calls depending on the year.
It is perhaps the most ironic Christmas story ever: a system built for the threat of war accidentally became a machine for wonder.
